FACT: Some insurance companies inform their subscribers (you the patient) that the doctor’s “fees are above usual and customary fees,” rather than saying “your benefits are low.” Remember, the insurance benefit paid is what your employer paid toward the plan less the insurance company’s profits (which is a lot) and administrative costs.
This is the basic business principal of the insurance company (not the dentist). YOUR DOCTOR IS NOT OVER-CHARGING YOU!
Also, the usual and customary fee is based on the lowest possible cost to provide the service, which means, according to the insurance company, you the patient, are expected to receive the lowest quality of care.
Most Dentists won’t compromise and those who still provide the good-high quality of care actually loose profits themselves. This is why the trend in dental care is following that in medical care. One doctor seeing or treating multiple patients at once. The loss has to recuperated somehow or the dentist would go out of business. The answer is to do what the dentist tells you, not what the insurance will cover.
